Innovation loans: September 2018 open competition
Innovate UK is to offer up to £10 million in loans to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). Projects should aim to develop new products, processes or services (or innovative use of existing ones) believed to be significantly ahead of anything similar in the field. IDP 15: the road to zero emission vehicles, large R&D
U.K businesses can apply for up to £4 million to research and develop technologies that accelerate the transition to zero emission vehicles. Innovate U.K expect the project innovation will, at the end of the project, have a viable route to market in support of the future supply chain for zero emission vehicles. Faraday Battery Challenge: innovation R&D, round 3
U.K businesses can apply for a share of up to £23 million for R&D projects focused on de-risking the scale up of battery development technology. This funding comes from the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. Projects must focus on the technical or commercial challenges in battery innovation, development and manufacture through UK supply chains. Open grant funding competition: round 3
You have an opportunity to apply for a share of up to £20 million to deliver game changing or disruptive innovations with significant potential for impact on the UK economy. Applications can come from any area of technology, science or engineering, including arts, design, media or creative industries, and be applied to any part of the economy. Agri-tech Catalyst round 7: agriculture and food systems innovation
There is up to £3 million of funding available from the Department for International Development (DFID) for early-stage feasibility studies, mid stage industrial research and late-stage experimental development. Energy Catalyst round 6: transforming energy access
Organisations can apply for a share of up to £10 million to address the need for clean, affordable and secure energy in Sub-Saharan Africa and South Asia. The aim of this competition is to support highly innovative, market-focused energy solutions in any technology or sector or international market. November expression of interest: UK Aerospace Research and Technology Programme
The U.K Aerospace Research and Technology (UKART) Programme represents a £3.9 billion joint government and industry investment to maintain and grow the UK’s competitive position in civil aerospace. To lead a project or work alone you must:
- be a UK based business, of any size, for research projects
- be a UK based business, of any size, an academic organisation or a research technology organisation (RTO) or academic organisation for capital investment projects
- plan to carry out an aerospace research or technology development project in the UK
- address the specific requirements of the UK Aerospace Technology Strategy
- sign up to the Aerospace Technology Institute (ATI) framework agreement

Planning rail capacity through automated infrastructure design
Network Rail will work with Innovate U.K, as part of U.K Research and Innovation, to invest up to £300,000. This will support the development and demonstration of new capability in automated design. Your project must:
- build on existing generative design technologies
- develop solutions relevant to rail
- prove your idea’s feasibility at as high a level of maturity as possible

SBRI: improve firefighters’ operations and safety with digital technology
Organisations can apply for a share of £1.25 million (including VAT) for an instantly deployable solution for real time tracking of firefighters at incidents. The aim of the competition is to instantly track firefighters inside a building in hostile and hazardous conditions. This will improve operational situation awareness and safety. Interested? Production innovation for immersive content
U.K businesses can apply for a share of up to £8 million for research and development projects to create faster, more efficient immersive content. This funding is from the Industrial Strategy Challenge Fund. The competition aims to explore future commercial opportunities in creative industries by funding pre-commercial innovative projects which:
- enable immersive content to be created faster, more efficiently or in new ways, and
- improve significantly on the current ‘state of the art’ in the field

UK Aerospace Research and Technology Programme: fast-track collaborative R&D EoI
UK organisations can apply for a share of up to £8 million to carry out collaborative R&D, collaborative fast-track and feasibility projects that enhance the UK’s position in civil aerospace.
