If your business makes all the loan payments on time, your collateral is safe. But if your business fails to make payments, the lender may be legally entitled to take ownership of your collateral.<\/p><p>This can be contrasted with an unsecured loan, which does not require you to offer assets as security. For example, they might be willing to lend you 75% of the value of your home, since it provides solid security for a loan. They might be willing to lend 90% of something even more stable and liquid, like cash, but only 50% of something less predictable, like inventory.<\/p>\n<p>Once the amount of the loan is determined, the lender will advance you a lump sum that you will repay in equal installments, usually monthly. Because your loan is secured by collateral, you can generally expect to have a longer period of time to repay the loan and a lower rate of interest than a borrower with an unsecured loan.<\/p>\n<p>If your business fails to keep up its payments, the lender has the legal right to seize your collateral to repay the loan.
