Many employers will conduct a background criminal check before offering a job, which often results in refusal. Even the option of starting their own business can be tough for entrepreneurs with a conviction, as many traditional lenders shy away from providing loans to those with a criminal record. Without the cash to run a business and few jobs available, it\u2019s no wonder that 60% of former inmates are still unemployed one year after release.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One alternative to this dilemma is grant funding. Available from non-profits, foundations, organizations and Government sources, grants for felons can be a crucial source of funds to get a startup off the ground or grow an existing business. However, take note that the grant application process can be very slow and awarded funds may have restrictions on their use.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Rise Up, Get Started Grant Program<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Provided by Missouri-based Determination Incorporated, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/determinationincorporated.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rise Up Get Started Grant Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> gives felons a pathway to building their own business. Participants take part in a year-long program &#8211; receiving coaching, mentoring and community support. They also get assistance to write their <a href=\"https:\/\/swoopfunding.com\/us\/business-glossary\/business-plan\/\">business plan<\/a> and create a budget. At the conclusion of the program, participants will have $300 saved for their business, plus a grant award of $750 to create a launch fund of more than $1,000.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>Georgetown Pivot Program<\/b><\/h3><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Launched in 2018, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pivot.georgetown.edu\/program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Georgetown Pivot Program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a one-year, full-time professional development program for career-orientated individuals who have previously been incarcerated. Participants gain experience and valuable skills with internships and coaching as well as working towards a post-program future of gainful employment or starting their own business. During the program, students receive a weekly stipend from the D.C Department of Employment Services, while those who choose to pursue their own business can enter their idea <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pivot.georgetown.edu\/program\/venture-incubation\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pivot\u2019s Pitch Competition<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> where they may win startup funding from investors. A total of $15,000 in grant funding was awarded in 2022.<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Program applicants must be aged 25 and above with a high school diploma or GED and who were last incarcerated within the past five years. Preference is given to D.C. residents. Up to 20 individuals are invited to participate in each program cohort.<\/span><\/p><h3><b>The Transform Business Grant<\/b><\/h3><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.transformgrant.org\/the-grant\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Transform Business Grant<\/span><\/a> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">supports entrepreneurs in systemically marginalized groups, including those who have been incarcerated. Applicants may receive a $1,000 microgrant and take part in a customized, year-long business strategy and development program. Applicants must be US-based and demonstrate a financial need.
