Animal Welfare Act

Definition

The Animal Welfare Act (AWA) is a federal law that regulates the treatment of animals in research, exhibition, transport, and by dealers.

What is the Animal Welfare Act?

The AWA sets standards for the humane care, handling, treatment, and transportation of animals to ensure their well-being. It requires individuals and businesses that handle animals to get licenses from the USDA and undergo regular inspections to ensure compliance with AWA regulations.

The Act establishes minimum standards of care for animals, including housing, feeding, sanitation, veterinary care, and handling practices. These standards vary depending on the species and intended use of the animals.

Furthermore, the AWA regulates the use of animals in research, teaching, and testing to minimize pain and distress. It requires that everything is reviewed and approved to be used in research involving animals.

The AWA requires certain facilities to provide reports on their animal use and compliance with AWA regulations, which are made available to the public.

The USDA’s APHIS upholds the AWA through inspections, investigations, and enforcement actions. Violations of the AWA can result in fines, license suspensions, or criminal penalties.

Example of the Animal Welfare Act

A livestock farm upholds the Animal Welfare Act by providing clean, spacious living conditions for its animals, making sure they have access to food, water, and shelter. Trained staff monitor animal health and well-being, promptly addressing any issues. The farm follows proper handling and transportation protocols and maintains detailed records of animal care. Additionally, it participates in educational programs to encourage responsible animal welfare practices.
