Sage keeps going where Xero stops

Xero is built for small businesses and stays there. Sage also sells finance systems for mid-sized and larger companies, so it is worth knowing what sits above Sage Accounting before you commit.

Sage 50 and Sage 200

Established UK companies, 10 to 200 staff

The long running UK workhorses. Deeper stock, manufacturing and CIS handling than the cloud product, with desktop or hosted options. Often the next step for a business that has outgrown Sage Accounting.

Sage 50 from around £14 a month · Sage 200 from around £50 per user

Sage Intacct

Finance teams with several entities

Cloud financial management for companies that need multi-entity consolidation, dimension based reporting and automated approvals. Sold and implemented through Sage partners rather than self serve.

Priced on application, typically from around £400 a month

Sage X3

Manufacturers and distributors

An enterprise resource planning system that pulls finance, production, supply chain and stock into one place. For businesses where the ledger is only part of the problem.

Priced per user, typically from around £150 a month each
Worth knowing: moving up the Sage range is a migration, not an upgrade in place. Sage Accounting data does not lift straight into Sage 50, Sage 200 or Intacct. Pick the product that fits the next two or three years, not just this one.

Which should you pick?

We are not going to crown a winner, because the answer changes with your business. Find yourself below.

Sole trader, no team yet

Xero
Simple or Ignite
Sage
Accounting Start
Xero costs less at the very bottom and gives you unlimited users from the start. Sage bundles payroll for one person and UK phone support. If you need to file VAT, skip Sage Start and look at Standard.

Small team with a quarterly VAT return

Xero
Grow
Sage
Accounting Standard
Within a couple of pounds a month of each other. Sage includes CIS where Xero charges £5, and its payroll covers one person. Xero wins on apps, reporting and unlimited users.

Stock, currencies or growth plans

Xero
Comprehensive or Ultimate
Sage
Accounting Plus
Xero is the stronger pick for reporting depth, project costing and integrations. Choose Sage if you expect to move up to Sage 200 or Intacct, or if bundled payroll for five people saves you real money.

Questions people actually ask

They are the current UK list prices without VAT, checked on 28 July 2026. Both firms run introductory offers, and Xero has confirmed a UK price rise from 1 September 2026, so check the live price on the partner site before you sign up.

Both are recognised by HMRC for Making Tax Digital for VAT and for Income Tax Self Assessment. One catch: Sage Accounting Start does not file VAT, so a VAT registered business needs Standard or above.

Sage bundles payroll into every plan, covering one employee on Start and Standard and five on Plus, with extras at about £1.50 a head. Xero charges £1.50 per person a month on top of Grow or Comprehensive, £1 on Ultimate, and does not offer payroll on Simple or Ignite.

Yes. You can move up or down a tier within the same product at any time. Moving between Xero and Sage means exporting your data and importing it, which is easiest done at the start of a financial year with your accountant.

Sage has products above it: Sage 50, Sage 200, Intact and X3. Be aware that moving up is a migration rather than a switch in place, so your data does not simply carry over.

Yes. Swoop earns a commission when you sign up through our links, at no extra cost to you. The commission does not change the prices above or what we say about either product.

How accounting software unlocks better funding

Connecting your accounting platform (like Xero or Sage) gives lenders a secure, real-time window into your business finances. Sharing your trusted accountancy data can help cut down on paperwork, speed up credit decisions, and potentially give you access to more competitive rates.

While you are here

The software bill is the small one. Cash flow is the big one.

Neat books make one thing very obvious: money in never quite lines up with money out. Swoop connects your accounts and shows the funding and savings you qualify for, in minutes.

Invoice finance
Unlock cash tied up in unpaid invoices, straight from your ledger.
Business loans and grants
See what you qualify for without a pile of paperwork.
Cost savings
Cut what you pay on banking, energy and FX.

Swoop is a partner of both Xero and Sage and earns a commission on sign-ups made through our links. Prices and features were checked on 28 July 2026 and exclude VAT.
